One step, then pause: five moments and a scene

Each moment describes only what you could see and hear. First pick out what you actually observed. Then decide what it supports, and pick the smallest reasonable next action. "Insufficient information" is a real answer, and sometimes the best one. No cue you see here is permission for touch.
